Using Financial Wonder
======================
Follow the instructions for "Loading Financial Wonder" in the
chapter "Getting Started." Once a file has been loaded, that file will
be available to the program no matter where in the program you are.
Whether you are Calculating, Printing or Converting to LOTUS
format, all operations will be performed on the active file. FW does
not use the hard disk for storage during use (only for permanent file
storage) therefore all information is contained in RAM (random-
access memory). Should you turn-off your computer, all file
information not saved to disk would be lost.
FOR USERS OF A TRIAL LIMITED-VERSION, ONLY
------------------------------------------
This limited-version will not allow you to save files,
print files, screen print, or convert files to Lotus 1-2-3.
Report Mode and Consolidation will operate. These modes are
very powerful, and we suggest that you try them for
yourself.
Import from Lotus 1-2-3 and Open Systems Accounting
Software is operational.
First take a look at the two demo files included with the program.
DEMO1 is a simple file. No sub-accounts have been added and only
simple formula methods have been used. However, the cash flow -
account #419000 on the Cash Statement - has been made to arrive at
$0. By trying different formula methods, one account at a time, you
will be able to see the effect of each formula method. This can be an
excellent learning tool.
DEMO2 has taken the same file but added a number of new sub-
accounts. Many of these accounts are linked to the results of other
accounts. Also, some of the more sophisticated formula methods have
been used.
If you are building your first file the following scenario should act as
a guide:
1. Load up NEW FILE.
2. Enter the file information prompted for.
3. Set up the data entry column structure of your file.
4. Enter Seasonality prompted for.
5. Move the main menu selection to Screens and press
ENTER.
Move the pull-down menu to Data Entry and press ENTER.
Note:Pressing the ESC key from the main menu selection
will return you to the last used spreadsheet. This
avoids moving to the Screens and then selecting
Data Entry, for example. This feature will not
operate on loading your first file at the very start of
your FW use, but will operate thereafter.
The B/S - Data Entry screen will be displayed (the screen
title is displayed in the upper left corner of the screen). If
you like, you may use the CURSOR COMMANDS to move
about the screen.
Press F1 to see the I/S - Data Entry screen.
Press F1 again to see the C/S - Data Entry screen.
Press F1 again to return to the B/S - Data Entry screen.
(pressing F1 again will repeat the steps just listed)
6. OK, let's start with the B/S - Data Entry screen.
Review the account descriptions and change any description
to fit your model. Move the cell-block to the row in question.
The account description to be changed will now be
highlighted. Press F6. You will be prompted for a new
account description in the lower left corner of the screen.
Enter a new account description and press ENTER. If you
change your mind before pressing ENTER, press ESC and
your initial request to change the account description will be
aborted. Continue to change any other account description to
your satisfaction. However, bear in mind that although you
can change an account's description you may not change its
character.
For example, the account "Accounts Receivable" will always
remain Accounts Receivable in FW's cash flow and ratio
analysis. Allowance for doubtful accounts will continue to be
entered as a positive amount, but is processed by FW as an
offset to Accounts Receivable. Goodwill expense will always
be non-tax deductible no matter what account description you
may substitute.
The three Data Entry screens contain approximately 250
predefined accounts. These accounts have account numbers
in even thousands (example: Cash is 100000 and Inventories
is 108000). New sub-accounts may be easily added (See
"Add New Line" in Chapter 5).
These sub-accounts have the same properties as the main
account.
For example, if you added a new Cash account #100001, all
forecasted amounts would be added to cash in the calculation
of Cash Flow and various Ratio Analyses. In addition, this
account could, if you choose, be "rolled-up" into Cash in
Financial Report printouts.
Add any new accounts which you will be needing. New
accounts can be added or deleted at any time. Please note
that only sub-accounts may be deleted. Accounts with
numbers in even thousands may not be deleted.
Do not concern yourself with accounts which will not be
used in your model. Printing of these accounts can be
suppressed in Financial Report printouts.
7. Use the CURSOR COMMANDS (see the chart in chapter
1) to move around the screen. You will notice that the
Formula Method is displayed just below the spreadsheet. Of
course, this new file uses method #101 somewhat
repetitively.
Let's go to the B/S - Formulas screen. From the Data Entry
screen, press F10. This will switch you into the Formulas
screen for the respective financial statement (B/S, I/S or C/S).
Unlike the Data Entry screen which provides one line to
each account number the Formulas screen provides two lines
to each account with one blank line between accounts. The
first line displays the chosen formula method for that cell,
with the second line providing the six digit link account or
the two digit seasonality chart number, if needed.
To enter or change a selected method simply move the cell-
block to the desired location and enter the new formula
method's number (entering the number is sufficient - there is
no need to first press an edit key). The new formula method
number will be displayed as you type in the lower left corner
of the screen. Press ENTER after you have completed
entering the number. You may also use the arrow keys to
both ENTER the new formula method number and move the
cell-block to a new location.
If you mistype the new number, simply use the <-- (back-
arrow key) to erase the last character(s) and continue entering
the new formula method number. Should you decide to leave
the original number unchanged simply press ESC. You will
be returned to the screen (use of the arrow keys prior to ESC
will enter the new number). Should you choose a method
requiring the entry of a link account number or seasonality
chart number, you will then be prompted for that
information.
Modify the Formula Methods to those of your liking. Press
F9 or / to return to the B/S - Data Entry screen. Move about
the screen. You will now notice that the Formula Method,
displayed just below the spreadsheet, will change to reflect
the Formula Method changes which you just completed. You
may only flip between Data Entry screens, not between
Formulas screens.
To enter or change the historical B/S you must use the
left arrow key from the first forecast column. All other
keys relate to the forecast columns only. As you will
generally not be changing the opening historical B/S.
HOME and CTRL + HOME relate to the first forecast
column and not the opening B/S. Enter dollar amounts into
your opening historical B/S.
Depending on the formula methods chosen, you will enter
Dollar or Unit amounts, or Percentages. In order to enter or
change amounts or percentages simply move the cell-block
to the desired location and enter the number (pressing the
number is sufficient - there is no need to first press an edit
key). The new number will be displayed as you type in the
lower left corner of the screen. Press ENTER after you have
completed entering the number. You may also use the arrow
keys to both enter the new number and move the cell-block
to a new location.
If you mistype the new number, simply use the <- (back-
arrow key) to erase the last character(s) and continue entering
the new number. Should you decide to leave the original
number unchanged simply press ESC. You will be returned
to the screen (use of the arrow keys prior to ESC will enter
the new number or 0).
Enter all forecast amounts and percentages at this time.
Press F1 and repeat steps 6 and 7 for the I/S - Data Entry
screen and the I/S - Formulas screen.
Press F1 and repeat steps 6 and 7 for the C/S - Data Entry
screen and the C/S - Formulas screen.
8. Press / to call-up the main menu.
Move the main menu selection to Screens and press ENTER.
Move the pull-down menu to Seasonality and press ENTER.
The Seasonality screen will be displayed. Change any
amounts to reflect the monthly seasonality of your model for
each year forecast.
If you are using formula methods which make use of
seasonality, you should set up one or more seasonality
screens to be used. All ten screens are active at all times. If
you have three product lines you may decide to use one
screen for all, or three separate seasonality screens. When
you select a seasonal formula method for a particular cell,
you will be prompted as to which seasonality screen (1 to 100)
you would like to use for the cell.
Yearly percentages must equal 100 percent for all years forecast.
Percentages may be to three decimal places.
9. Press / to call-up the main menu.
Move the main menu selection to Calculate and press ENTER.
Move the pull-down menu to Calculate and press ENTER.
The file will be Calculated (or re-calculated).
You will be returned to the main menu.

Before proceeding with re-calculate or printouts,
Move the main menu selection to Files and press ENTER.
Move the pull-down menu to Save and press ENTER.
If you have made changes,
Move the main menu selection to Calculates and press ENTER.
Re-run the calculation.
Review the revised results to your satisfaction.
If no changes have been made you should run a printout of
at least your data entry.
Printouts are made for several reasons:
1. To obtain a printout of the screens. This allows for
easy review of Data Entry, Formulas, Calculations
and Monthly Calc screens.
2. Easy review without the need to have a computer
available at all times.
3. Proposed changes may be made to these work
copies.
4. Copies may be sent to others for their approval.
5. Permanent storage in case of hard disk failure.
Move the main menu to Printout and press ENTER.
Before printouts may be run, some small steps are needed.
Move the pull-down menu to Print Option and press ENTER.
Select #12 - Print B/S Historical Period?
A screen will ask you whether you wish to print the
historical (opening) Balance Sheet. Press Y or y for YES,
N or n for NO.
If you do not perform this step, your previous
selection will be maintained. If this is a new file,
'NO' has been stored automatically.
Other Print Options
-------------------
Review the other print options. Enter your selection by
pressing the number of your choice and press ENTER. If
you would like to change your printer setup you may do so
now or at any future time. Don't be afraid to play with
different typefaces or changing the lines per inch. If you like
small condensed printouts (or reports) try superscript (16
characters per inch) with 8 lines per inch printing. Or stick
to a standard 10 characters per inch with 6 lines per inch. It's
a snap to change!
Enter 13 and press ENTER to return to the main menu.
Move the pull-down menu to Print Select and press ENTER.
Select the printouts which you would like sent to your
printer. Move the cell-block to the printout(s) which you
would like, and press Y or y. If you change your mind press
N or n. Continue until you have marked all your selections.
Press / when you have completed your selections.
Move the pull-down menu to Printouts and press ENTER.
Make sure that the proper printer driver program has been
installed and that the printer is attached with power on.
Press Y to continue.
The requested screens will be printed out. The status of the
printing will be displayed on screen.
Press "S" to abort printing. Press "E" to abort printing at the
completion to the financial statement being printed. Turning
off the printer will also allow you to abort printing
immediately, however, you will have to reset your printer
(align the top of page).
13. Press / to call-up the main menu.
Move the main menu selection to Reports and press ENTER.
Move the pull-down menu to Acct On/Off and press ENTER.
This allows you to customize your reports. Up to 20 different
report layouts may be stored and then selected for printing.
Both B/S and I/S may be customized as follows
1. Unless otherwise specified all accounts will be
printed out.
2. If a sub-account is changed to "Off" any amounts in
that account will be added to the main account. The
line for that particular sub-account will not be
printed.
3. If the main account is changed to "Off" any amounts
in that account will be added to its respective Other
account. For example, if inventories were to be
changed to "Off" its amount would be added to
Other Current Assets. If Gross PP & E were to be
changed to "Off" its amount would be added to
Other Assets.
4. If both a main account and some or all of its sub-
accounts were changed to "Off" those amounts would
all be added to its respective Other account. The sub-
accounts left "On" would print normally.
Press / when finished.
14. Move the pull-down menu to ReportSelect and press ENTER.
Select the reports which you would like sent to your printer.

yourself in five settings for over twenty key ratios.
Move the pull-down menu to Ratio Calc and press ENTER.
After setting up your expectations on key ratios, and
assuming you have previously calculated the current file you
can view your Company's performance one ratio at a time.
NOTE: Changes to RatSensitive do not require a re-
calculation. All Ratio Calc amounts are
performed on the fly.
Both your grade and each ratio for the monthly forecast are
displayed. Press Up or Dn (PgUp, PgDn, Home, End, Tab,
and Ctrl Tab all operate as expected) to move through the
key ratios. Press F1 to toggle with FW commentary on the
respective ratio. (These comments are stored in a separate
database file in the c:\wonder\data directory called
FWRATIO).
Move the pull-down menu to RatRptSelect and press ENTER.
Select the reports which you would like sent to your printer.
Move the cell-block to the report(s) which you would like,
and press Y or y. If you change your mind press N or n.
Continue until you have marked all your selections, then
press / when completed.
Move the pull-down menu to RatioRepts and press ENTER.
The requested screens will be printed out. The status of the
printing will be displayed on screen.
16. Press / to call-up the main menu.
Move the main menu selection to Files and press ENTER.
Move the pull-down menu (up) to LOTUS Conv and press ENTER.
FW Calculation and Monthly Calc files may be exported to
LOTUS 1-2-3 (there is no import facility). FW creates data
files in the "WONDER" directory on your hard drive which
may then be called directly by LOTUS 1-2-3. Files created
will be complete with pre-arranged cell widths, range names
by group (ex: Total Current Assets), and SUM of rows or
ranges. Although the LOTUS file will not be interactive, our
use of SUM and range names will make it easy for you to
modify the file in LOTUS 1-2-3, if you wish.
Select the reports which you would like sent to a LOTUS
file. Move the cell-block to the report(s) which you would
like, and press Y or y. If you change your mind press N or
n. Continue until you have marked all your selections. Press
/ when you have completed your selections. The files will
then be created or overwritten. Press ESC to abort your
selection.
LOTUS file names have been pre-selected for you. If you
wish to permanently save these files you will need to rename
the newly created LOTUS files by using MS-DOS.
Otherwise, these files will be overwritten the next time you
create LOTUS files.
